>> Handset Makers Beefing Up Exports of GPRS Models

Korea Herald
December 1, 2001

As Europeans get ready to dump their current generation, or 2G, handsets in favor of faster models, Korean handset makers are beefing up exports of the so-called GPRS (general packet radio service) models for Europe.

Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics have already tested the water in the European GPRS market.

Telecom operators in Europe are currently rolling out slower next-generation GPRS models before launching high-speed third generation (3G) networks in late 2002.

GPRS, which is twice as fast as the European 2G service called GSM (global service for mobile communications), is expected to emerge as the mainstream service in coming months.

Samsung is set to provide 5,000 units of GPRS handset model, SGH-Q100, to T-Mobile, a German mobile carrier. The model can deliver data transmission at up to 114Kbps.

Samsung plans to sell 500,000 units of GPRS phones in Europe by year-end and nine million units by the end of 2003.

LG Electronics said its export of GPRS handsets will accelerate early next year after completing a field test.

Maxon Telecom, which owns GSM phone manufacturing technologies, said it is close to finishing the development of GPRS model, MX-7810. The company plans to roll out eight more GPRS models in 2002.
