If you read "Ball Four" by Jim Bouton, you would know that Mickey Mantle was one of the biggest racists ever.

When I was a sophmore at College, I took a course "Sociology of Sport", with a super progressive jock professor. We also read "Out of their League"" by Dave Megessey, on the NFL and "The Athletic Revolution" by Jake Scott on the NBA. All of these books (also we read "Rip Off The Big Game") were great reads on how the major sports vehicles in America are ultra right wing and part of the military establishment.

As for the Penguin article, it's nice to see the hype.

The Islanders have some of that also going on at Fan Fest:

"All Fan Fest activities will begin on the plaza two hours prior to puck drop (10 a.m. on May. 5 and 5 p.m. on May 7). Fans can join the cause and participate in ‘Smash Car,’ where they will have the opportunity to put their mark on a car decked out in Penguins black and gold. For $5, fans will take a sledgehammer and have one swing to put a dent in the car (all proceeds will benefit the Islanders Children’s Foundation). A $10 donation will get you three swings at the black and gold vehicle."
