chic, i would say whether the cycle top is in, or near, is a matter of debate. i remember very well, that few people were able to call previous cycle tops and/or bottoms in the semis.

a friend of mine was talked into selling his AMAT convertibles with the stock at a pre-split $24 in late '98, by none other than Morgan Stanley. they caught almost THE low.

in '95, at a previous cycle top, MU was said to be about to go stratospheric (exactly what one hears now). that call (by Rick Witless) marked the exact top.

i agree with you though that perception overrules reality on WS...
