Jeff,

That is a great question. John 8:56 "Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad." Basically, Abraham knew of the promise that was Christ. The Messiah was foretold to the children of promise from the beginning. That is why Christ's sacrifice is for ALL time: past, present and future.

However, with regards to Judas and to all before the death of Christ, there was no gift of the Holy Spirit. It is by the death of Christ that salvation has come to all men. The Holy Spirit was given and taken away in times past. An example would be Saul. The Holy Spirit was taken from him. Also, David prays that God would not take His Spirit from him. But now we have a promise that is so much greater than could ever be given through the law. We have Jesus Christ who perfectly fulfilled the law and died on our behalf. We rest in what He did not on anything we do.

Simply put, you are right. Judas was not saved.
