there is a STRONG desire with infertile hetero couples to adopt (and as you said, lesbians have higher adoption rates, the reasons should be obvious)

If the only factor were ability to have children, lesbians would have an even lower rate of adoption because they are both capable of invitro fertilization, and hence can have their own children.

I think the picture is more complicated than you think.
