I'd been long VRSN for several months. I watched the stock go from the 40s to the 20s to the 40s to the low 30s. Though I believe in the co. and its products, I'm not a believer in its stock. It seems the co. makes a ground-breaking announcement every week, but investors don't seem to care. The co. does not trade w/ the internet commerce plays -- AOL, AMZN, ONSL, etc., and was down significantly on a very strong day for the Internet stocks. Imagine if the co. announced bad news? I'm out and took the $ and put it in E*Trade. I think EGRP is a good Internet stock value (oxymoron?) and is on the verge of overhauling its site to include advertising and begin emphasizing msg./chat forums. Yes, its core business is subject to intense competition and thin margins, but its brand name and technology competancies will enable the co. to transform itself into a sort of financial portal. As part of the Softbank daibatsu including Geocities, Yahoo! and Ziff-Davis, and w/ a deal w/ AOL, E*Trade has some strong allies The stock's a keeper right now -- VRSN is prob. a yr. or so away -- Scott. |
