All these things are true.
To have a good chance to establish a new system standard, you have to be there at the right time [not ahead of time], with the right OS, working well, with lots of money and partners to get applications ported and with good marketing. Even with all that, it is a long shot.
Palmer stood to make out big, personally, if that long shot paid off. He developed essentially no viable long-term alternative for the company. The shareholders, whether they realized it or not, were going for broke, courtesy of Palmer. Now that they presumably realize that, I hope they give Palmer all the consideration he has due.
