Tom Bevan: "Why Bill's Attack Will Hurt Obama"

Bevan: "Yes, Clinton is a partisan and married to Obama's chief opponent.

"But he's also the most popular figure in the party and a former president.

"If he doesn't think Obama is ready to be president, it surely will count for something with a good many voters, probably a lot — if not now, then down the road."

Good points.

Here's why Obama is impervious to attacks by the Clintons:

1. What personal attack can Clinton make?

Sex and drugs are off the table because Clinton did sex and drugs.

Personal finances are off the table because from the cattle futures deal forward, the Clintons have been money-grubbing opportunists.

Attacks on Obama's campaigning are off the table because the Clintons lead the league in money laundering.

Flip-flopping? As Santa says: Ho, ho, ho.

His youth and inexperience are off the table because Clinton was younger when he ran.

2. Barack Obama comes off as an incredibly nice guy. He projects sincerity and honesty. He's a guy you disagree with politically and still like.

3. Finally, attacks seem like the last gasps of a dying campaign. Especially when they are on goofy stuff like kindergarten essays. Who writes essays in kindergarten? Methinks a sweet old lady overstated her memories of a student she is fond of.

The Clintons seem to be using their 1992 playbook. It is 2007. Much has changed. The CD has given way to the MP3 which gave away to the iPod.

Larry King does not rule the airwaves. Jon Stewart does.

That's why Hillary entered the campaign so soon in January. Too soon. That made for a longer campaign and at 60, the wear and tear is showing. It also meant that the media focused on her, not him, which meant he went unexamined.

I'm not saying she's dead politically. The Clintons are political vampires. I am saying they need a whole new playbook. Body slams by Bill only make Obama look stronger. It is like being attacked by Jimmy Carter.
