 Business Wire - March 06, 2000 09:17

 PARSIPPANY, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 6, 2000--DRS
Technologies, Inc. (ASE:DRS) announced today a sizable order in the
rapidly growing laser vision correction industry - a milestone that
marks the company's expansion into a new commercial market.

As the exclusive manufacturer of electro-optical modules for the
LADARVision(R) System used in corrective laser eye surgery, the
company's DRS Optronics unit in Palm Bay, Florida, captured a
$10.3 million order from Autonomous Technologies Corporation, a
unit of Summit Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:BEAM), an international
leader in laser vision correction systems. DRS will produce the
upper optics module, which contains the unique high-speed eye
tracker and microscope elements, the precision laser optics and the
excimer laser enclosures. The LADARVision(R) System is the only
system that combines this laser radar eye tracker with
narrow-beam shaping technology for the correction of
near-sightedness and astigmatism. It is the only FDA-approved laser
system to incorporate an eye tracker during surgery.

According to industry analysts, as many as 1.7 million Americans
will undergo laser eye surgery this year, up from 900,000 in
 1999.

Mark S. Newman, chairman, president and chief executive officer of
DRS Technologies, commented: "Vision correction ranks among the
largest medical markets today and is expanding at a rapid pace. Our
electro-optical modules are key components that capture, track and
compensate for rapid eye movements and ensure precise delivery of
the laser beam. With the LADARVision(R) System, physicians have a
powerful, cost-effective premium product for their rapidly
expanding laser vision correction practices. We believe physicians
recognize that LADARVision(R) is the technology platform for the
future of the industry. With more than 30 years of experience in
developing and manufacturing complex targeting and laser systems
for the military that meet stringent standards, DRS is well qualified
to adapt our innovative electro-optical systems production
technology for LADARVision(R) and a range of other applications."
