Hi Snow! In mid-90s I've got a job in S. E. Asia as I was very curious about what was going on in Asia and wanted to experience it first hand.

I am not patting my own back here but after six weeks in Indonesia I discovered that the Asian century was a mirage concocted by clever marketing people.

The educational system was a joke. The infrastructure could not carry the economy. But overall it was the mentality. You would point to me that it was an overall low education that created that. No. It wasn't. It was ingrained.

I called it the 'styrofoam mentality'. There are people who have a 'sponge mentality' and absorb easily from other business environment. But it was worse amigo. They pretended to have absorbed but deep inside they were old Asian at the core.

They emphasized education and took it seriously, but the system produced Asian graduates. It was just more education but still the same guy or girl. As this cadre produced late 80s and during the 90s -they crashed int he Asian Meltdown of 1998- got experienced, they become less and less interested in absorbing what was foreigner. In short, they became too confident in what they were doing.

RESULT: They are just a new version of their parents and grandparents. Thus Gary Schilling article ending: "large middle classes that support domestic economies and all the institutions that are largely lacking in developing Asian lands."

But we have our example TJ right here. Educated in Cornell. Exposed to many different environments. Have the money to explore and have a diverse back ground. Look inside: TJ is Asian to the core.
