Yup, there are some real peaches in the teaching profession. My guess is they're wildly outnumbered by drones, most of whom don't follow the lead of their betters. Under a better system, your nephew should receive superior monetary rewards commensurate with his contributions. I've encountered too many kids who can't read, write or cipher worth a damn. More insidiously, knowledge of history and civics seems sorely lacking. I have three step grandkids convinced that "democracy" is a wondrous thing; therefore, anything the government does is in the general best interest.
