I beg to differ with you that OSPF was not intended to a replacement for RIP. I did make a mistake for calling it a Cisco proprietary protocol. It was actually developed by the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) and is an open protocol.

"Intended" and what the real world uses it for are two totally different things.

Try implementing OSPF using multi-point interfaces who's PVC CIRs are very low, or overutilized. You will have a network that implodes every other day. Rip, although it is not know as an efficient and fast converging routing protocol, is very robust.
