You have to remember that in the aftermath of Watergate, there were a lot Democrats who were afraid the Republican party would dry up and blow away. So there wasn't the air of "we will crush you and sell your children into slavery" stance that especially DeLay has. The Democrats did cater to their constituency, like the Republicans are doing now. I suppose you can argue pushing for the equal rights amendment is the same as pushing for an amendment against gay marriages, but...

I think the Democratic constituency was less interested in telling everyone else what to do or believe. But the opposite argument has been made.
