Dan, have you ever read Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God? The congregation had a glimpse of what hell is like and it was said that terror struck them something fierce. Some literally had the sensation of the floor of the church falling into the flames of hell and clutched onto the pillars that supported the church for all they were worth. Many had to have their hands pried loose hours after the service was over since were so terrified. It's one thing for man to use the threat of hell as a devise for men to change their ways, but it's a totally different story when God reveals that which awaits the unGodly sinner. That was the beginning of a real Holy Ghost revival because now people were being sincere with God.
