Competition stiff at wide receiver The Bears have nine quality receivers but perhaps only six regular-season roster spots slotted for them. Second-year pro D'Wayne Bates is an interesting prospect but a hamstring injury has cost him two weeks and possibly a job as well. Dez White's speed and Macey Brooks' size might give them the edge over injury-plagued Bates. "[I'm] trying to make sure I'm not too hasty to judge (Bates)," wide receivers coach Mike Borich told the Chicago Sun-Times. But Borich is also high on 5-foot-6 speed merchant Corey Bridges, who has had a great camp. Jauron likes what he sees but favors caution Dick Jauron ended his second training camp with the Bears on Wednesday and said the merit of the camp will be proven on the field. Two areas that the Bears appear to have significant improvement are team speed and depth. Jauron stressed that he doesn't want to feel too good about his team before they play some real games. "We have gained ground on others, but we have to play to see how much we've gained," said Jauron in the Chicago Tribune. "Right now, it's all on paper." In addition to signing four prominent defensive free agents, Chicago took LB Brian Urlacher with the ninth overall pick in this year's draft. ESPN.com's John Clayton wrote about Chicago's additions on defense during his tour of training camps. Postcard from Bears camp News and notes Chicago Mayor Richard Daley claims the city and the Bears are close on an agreement to renovate 76-year-old Soldier Field, the Chicago Tribune reported. The possible deal is not a "home run" but "it's more than a triple. It's close," Daley told reporters in Burbank, Calif. Monday.
