DIANA TAPES 'REVEAL PALACE RAPE'
DAILY MAIL

Sun Jul 22 2001 18:01:51 ET

Prince Charles was last night said to be deeply concerned that police are investigating allegations of rape by a member of his staff on another male royal servant.

The sensational claims come in secret tape recordings made by Diana, Princess of Wales at the bedside of the alleged victim two years before her death in 1997.

The recordings of the extraordinary allegations were brought to Scotland Yard's attention during the investigation into Diana's former butler Paul Burrell and the alleged theft of GBP 6 million worth of property which had belonged to the Princess.

Last night inquiries were met by official silence. A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said: 'We wouldn't comment on anything to do with employees. Any personnel matters remain private.'

And a police spokeswoman would only say: 'The Metropolitan Police is investigating an allegation of serious sexual assault. It would be inappropriate to comment further.'

The dramatic intervention by senior officers shook courtiers in Charles's inner circle.

It is understood Charles himself was made aware of the potential scandal seven years ago by the Princess herself. It led to an internal inquiry but after the alleged attacker strenuously denied the claims no further action was taken.

Only now, amid the investigation into Mr Burrell, have police launched their own inquiries into the sexual assault.

The Mail on Sunday can reveal Mr Burrell knows of the existence of the bombshell tapes although he is not one of the two men involved.

Last night he said: 'I know the man behind the complaint and I would never discuss his private life.'
