An argument could be made that it would be "unfair" to try keeping hundreds of millions of willing and able human beings back in the stone age, living at a subsistence level.

But by now the cat is out of the bag anyway. If we isolate ourselves, we'll be left behind. While it is true that there is great uncertainty with respect to where all this leads, there seems to be no way back.
