I'm reminded of the debate I posted yesterday, Dr Satcher's arguments. The debate question was whether obesity was the government's business. His perspective, best I could tell, was that some people didn't have access to whatever was necessary to avoid obesity, ergo it was the government's job to see that they got it. I think that's the left's dominant consideration. They apply it to everything. Some people are disadvantaged, ergo the government needs to jump in and take care of it. I think they are pretty much oblivious to the number of logical steps there are between identifying a need and creating a government program. The meaning of "insurance" is so far beyond consideration that it might as well not exist. It's not that they don't understand your point, simply that it's beside the point. Need --> government program, period.

I recall an observation I made shortly after Reagan became president. Prior to that, letters to the editor typically followed the format of stating a need and jumping immediately to what the government should do about it. Used to bug me. Some time after, I noticed that that theme had all but disappeared. I considered that a good thing. Too bad it wasn't a permanent change.
