Sony to Experiment with Hi-Fi Sound on the Net
October 2, 1997 (TOKYO) -- Sony Corp. in November will distribute
Internet Arena Player software that can play back the mini disc-grade,
hi-fi music on the Internet.
Sony and Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) Inc. will use MD audio
compression technology known as adaptive transform acoustic coding
(ATRAC)in an audition the two companies will host on their Web site.
ATRAC encodes sound data at sampling rate of 16 bits and 44.1KHz, the
same as CDs and MDs. It also compresses the signals into 1/20 the space
for delivery on the Internet. The sound can be played in stereo with
MD-class sound quality.
The company said it will conduct more tests and evaluate how the MD's
compression technology can be applied to the Internet.
As the first experiment, Sony Music Entertainment will use the IA Player
on its Internet Arena audition Web site starting in November.
Music played by new-age artists will be placed on the site in the IA
player format for Internet users to enjoy. IA Player will be downloaded
from the Internet Arena site.
Sony does not have immediate plans to propose the format as a new
Internet standard. But there is a possibility the company may do that in
future, market observers said.
