September natural gas futures spiked 10 percent late Wednesday, driven by a strong run up in crude, a firm physical market and expectations for a bullish weekly inventory report Thursday despite milder U.S. weather this week, traders said. Late in the day session, the nearby September contract rallied 74.2 cents to $7.90 per million British thermal units after opening in the $7.43 area. Last week, September climbed to a six-month spot chart high of $8.619, then skidded to a $6.76 low on Monday after Tropical Storm Chris fell apart over the weekend and as temperatures over much of the U.S. moderated.
