Whatever the differences in circumstances the war has become a quagmire in the same sense as Vietnam. What was once expected to be a war of 5-6 months duration is now up to ten years. I think its unfair for any people to have to fight a war for ten years or more.

Before 10 years (or 7) I think there will either be peace,

You don't that. There is nothing happening that would suggest you are correct.

relative peace some degree of instability and occasional violence but not a wide scale active insurgency, or we will at least have built up the Iraqi government forces enough for them to handle the war by themselves. I suspect the 2nd choice is the most likely. Things will become much more peaceful in Iraq but like Northern Ireland had over a period of decades, there will still be occasional violence and terrorism.

Or like Palestine........in either case, a standing army is needed and in both cases, those armies are subsidized by a foreign power.

There are many instances where religious fights have gone on for over a decade.........Lebanon is one of the more recent ones.

I am afraid the current leaders of this country did not pay too much attention to history when they attacked Saddam the second time. And its the average American who is and will pay the price.
