Assumption... you didn't answer the question. re: I don't have any kids so I haven't raised a family of four on $50k, but I know people who have, and my parents raised a family of 13 on only about double that (maybe three times with inflation). Its not hellish. It doesn't suck. Its normal life. Its normal life for tens of millions of Americans, and would be like a dream for billions of other people. Did your family have health insurance? Were wages increasing considerably faster than inflation (the answer is yes)? Were housing costs going up ~8% every year? Layoffs? You have no clue what working class families go through these days.
