I live in an area that is considered cheap... certainly compared with major cities (where the good jobs are). Of course everything is relative, but you if you live in an area where the wages are realtively high then the housing costs are also going to be relatively high.

It's true you can have a decent life by renting, but in the long term, your rent increases with inflation. If you own, your cost is a fixed cost, and presumably you can get ahead of inflation and benefit from (imaginary or real) wage increases.

It's difficult for the working class to live in Houston and work in Manhatten, to take advantage of the geographic wage/cost benefit.
