Mitsubishi Elec to Sell Phone With Organizer Functions Next Mth

--From AOL.-- Cooters

Tokyo, Aug. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Mitsubishi Electric Co., which sells its mobile phones under the Trium brand in Europe, will start selling in the region a model equipped with electronic organizer functions, from next month.

Named Mondo, the hybrid features Mitsubishi Electric's General Packet Radio Service technology, which moves information faster by bundling data into packets. The black-and-white screen device will run the Windows CE operating system, which enables users to store documents, keep diaries and check time.

Mitsubishi is upgrading its mobile phone functions in a bid to boost handset sales. President Ichiro Taniguchi said last month that he plans to raise the sales target for the year through March 31, 2001, by 1 percent to 27 million units. Of the total, the company counts on sales of 16 million units in Europe, 4 million in North America and 7 million at home.

``We are increasing the variety in our product line'' to attract more customers, said Toshio Masujima, a spokesman for Mitsubishi Electric.

The company has been also working with Sharp Corp. to develop mobile phones with electronic organizer functions to be sold in Europe next year.
