Stock Guru, when you speak of 50+ years of course no one can know with total certainty what that will bring. A couple of things to consider tough, and something Bill Gates recently talked about in a speach I heard on MSNBC. If your a company which is currently as successful as Intel and Microsoft. You have many inherent advantages. Besides the obvious ones such as deep pockets, marketing, and talented workers. What you have is the "customers" It's up to you to lose them. If your listening to your customers they will tell you where you should be investing your R&D and what type of products you should be bringing to the market. It sounds simple, but how many companies have really done that long term, with great success.

50 years from now, Intel may not be inventing what we today call microprossesors, they may be something totally different. Maybe molecular nanites for all we know, but if they are listening to their customers and investing in R&D appropriatly they will lead that industry too. It's up to them to lose this tremendous lead they now enjoy. I am very confident in the management of this company that they will forsee this change and invest and shift accordingly.

Also of great importance is the amazing capital it takes to compete against a company of Intel's size. Fab's are getting more and more expensive. Who will risk the kind of capital it would take to seriously compete with Intel's manufacturing capabilities? Do you know any company willing to spend nearly 5 billion dollars on plants and equipments? Most countries can't even afford that.
