The Atlanta-based company said it was renegotiating a high-speed cable deal with Charter Communications Inc. (NasdaqNM:CHTR - News) that would hit its revenue and high-speed subscriber numbers during a transition period that could last about a year.

EarthLink, like many of its Internet peers, is struggling with customer defections in its dial-up business as it tries to increase its high-speed, or broadband, subscriber base.
