Scientific-Atlanta Inc. said Monday it is doubling its capacity to
produce advanced digital set-tops at itsmanufacturing facility in
Juarez, Mexico.Advanced digital set-tops comprise a new category of home
communications terminals featuring Internet protocol-based technology
and computer-like capabilities for instantaneous two-way interactivity.
''Scientific-Atlanta is ramping up production in response to increased
demand for our advanced digital set-tops from both U.S. and Canadian
operators,'' Greg Taylor, Scientific-Atlanta's vice president of
worldwide manufacturing, said in a statement.Doubling manufacturing
capabilities also positions Scientific-Atlanta for future potential
expansion into a retail environment, the companysaid.
Scientific-Atlanta's 225,000 square foot consumer product manufacturing
facility has adjacent land available for further expansion of the plant.
By October 1998, Scientific-Atlanta's Juarez manufacturing facility will
be capable of doubling production of its flagship advanced
digitalproduct, the Explorer 2000 set-top, and increasing production of
its 8600x advanced analog set-top."l mason
