I tried watching some of the "Ab Fabs" British TV series which is supposed to be funny but I had the same problem. I could understand the people on "Are You Being Served". Maybe they were from a different region.

Yes, quite a bad quake. 7.9 or so. Even China is sending aid. Could be this might relieve some of the tension between the two countries.
