I lived and worked in LA in the late 70's and early 80's. I found it pretty much a UN style melting pot of all colors and ethnicities, getting along fairly well, for the most part.

Having said that, I noticed that even back then, what racism I came into contact with was not white against minority, but minority against minority. Some hispanics I knew were very disparaging of blacks and freely used the "n" word in conversation. There was even quite a bit of prejudice from US born hispanics towards new illegals. "Wetbacks" was a term thrown about just as casually as the "n" word.

I can only imagine what it's like there now. I really do see the possibility of the black/Mexican rift as a time bomb in the Dem coalition..
