HWP co-developed Merced with INTC. They have had HPUX (64-bit)
running on them in the "lab" for the last 2-3 years. I know
because I was on the porting team @HWP.

The chip is not a bad chip, but not a RISC-killer either. That
is why INTC has decided to follow up with "McKinley", the "REAL
RISC-killer". It is supposed to be ready in another year or
so. That is why the "rumor" makes sense. Merced is late, it's
not competitive in the 64-bit market when compared to the
UltraSparc, INTC has started a new project to fix the chip
with a replacement so the manufacturing run is rumored to be <
100,000 units.

Now, that logic isn't too hard to follow, is it?
