Free trade is great. There are some things though that have to be looked at from a different angle than just economics.

Some basic industries are vital to a nations defense.
One of the reasons why Iraq can never beat the US in a war is because they don't build their own tanks and planes.
Every asset they lose is gone forever.

The US on the other hand, constantly replenishes assets because we have a steel industry.

Not all industries, most in fact, aren't critical, but some are.

People should take this into consideration.. IMO> If the US had to depend on a foreign power to supply us with enough steel to support a war, we would in reality be dependant on them. There's no guarantee that they would keep us supplied.

Sure we could start up the steel business again if we had to, but it doesn't do our soldiers much good in the middle of a battle to find out they have to wait 8 months for a tank to arrive, because "our" steel industry is now in China, and they decided they don't like what we are doing, and we had to start from scratch..

Just something to think about.
