"Turnout was heavier than expected in precincts around Richmond and in Northern Virginia, especially since this is an off-year election with no presidential or congressional races on the ballot. In Arlington County, both early morning votes and absentee balloting were up significantly, said county registrar Linda Lindberg. In North Arlington, at Glebe Elementary School, 25 voters were in line at 6 a.m., said precinct captain Mike Horner. At Drew Recreational Center, precinct captain Tyra Baker said 40 people voted in the first 15 minutes. And at Thomas Jefferson Community Center, the dozen people waiting at 8:45 a.m. formed the shortest line that Charles Head, the precinct captain there, had seen all morning.

“It’s been a steady stream since we opened, and it hasn’t stopped,” Head said.
