Devices to overtake people on the Internet

NEW YORK -- World Wide Web site developers today are fighting over the millions of users online, but within several years they will be wooing a far larger but less animate crowd: a vast array of devices, from refrigerators to light bulbs and toys, according to two keynote speakers at the Seybold Seminars conference here.

Speaking Monday, keynoter Nicholas Negroponte, director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Laboratory, said that by 2000 $1 trillion of transactions will flow over the Internet, a figure that's far higher than many other estimates, he said.
