The rate of HIV-1 progression varies greatly. Approx 5% develop AIDS within 3 yrs; yet, 12% have remained free of AIDS for 20+ yrs. The CD4+ cell count is a prognostic indicator for disease progression. HIV RNA plasma levels reflect HIV production in tissue sites (10 billion virions per day in infected people) and are a predictive value on long-term survival. Each 3 fold (0.5 log) reduction in viral load is associated with 30% decrease in clinical progression. Each 10% increase in CD4+ cell count is associated with a 15% decrease in clinical progression.
