LSI Logic Licenses ZSP(TM) Digital Signal Processor Core to Conexant For Wireless Mobile Applications
Conexant Joins Major Industry Leaders in Supporting Open Architecture Strategy
PHOENIX, March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE: LSI), the Communications Company, today announced that Conexant Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CNXT) has licensed LSI Logic's ZSP400 digital signal processor (DSP) core for integration across its product lines supporting wireless mobile and communications applications.
"The open architecture of LSI Logic's ZSP core complements Conexant's high-performance, low-power proprietary DSP core and provides us with more flexibility in meeting the wireless industry's demand for new features and cost-effective solutions," said Murthy Renduchintala, vice president and business director of Cellular Systems for Conexant. "Licensing an open core provides access to third party tools and software that will enhance our ability to respond to shorter design cycles and market requirements. This agreement strengthens our product portfolio as we move towards 3G systems."
Conexant, an industry leader in communication semiconductor devices, joins IBM, Broadcom and Virata in supporting LSI Logic's ZSP open architecture strategy. By providing ZSP technology as an open architecture, LSI Logic is putting high-speed, portable technology in the hands of designers to facilitate independence from the proprietary technology model. The architecture is supported by a Solution Partners program consisting of best-in-class third party application and software vendors. LSI Logic's ZSP core has the strongest third party support among licensable DSP providers.
"ZSP is a world-class, high-performance DSP core that is becoming widely accepted in the industry because of its capabilities and strong Solution Partners," said market analyst Will Strauss of Forward Concepts (Tempe, AZ). "This newest licensing agreement enables Conexant to expand on its Wireless third-generation products."
The ZSP architecture offers the best combination of high-performance, high code density and effective compiler performance of any DSP available in silicon. LSI Logic's ZSP has a unique superscalar DSP technology, with its four processing units and a five-stage pipeline, it can sustain up to 2 MAC and 2 ALU instructions per cycle. The RISC-based architecture, single-cycle instruction execution and hardware controlled pipeline enable C compilers and assembly-level programmers to easily exploit the processing power, thereby improving programmer productivity and time-to-market. It also provides inherent software compatibility among multiple ZSP processor generations, preserving customers' investment in software development.
"LSI Logic views DSP as an enabler for end products," said Tuan Dao, director of advanced DSP products for LSI Logic. "We invest heavily to ensure that ZSP is much more than just a DSP hardware engine. Our ZSP technology and Solution Partners program provides world-class tools and support for product development from A to Z: from system architecture, software design, simulation and co-verification, to plug-and-play algorithms. With ZSP, customers are not just getting a DSP, they are getting a complete, high-quality solution."
