The Times: Still Running Interference for Kerry!

Power Line

The New York Times did everything it could to get John Kerry elected President in 2004, and the paper is still running interference for him. We haven't yet commented on this astonishing piece by Kate Zernike, which appeared yesterday. It is misleading and tendentious in a number of ways, but what is remarkable is that Zernike flatly misrepresents what Kerry said:

<<< Mr. Kerry's prepared remarks to California students on Monday called for him to say, "Do you know where you end up if you don't study, if you aren't smart, if you're intellectually lazy? You end up getting us stuck in a war in Iraq. Just ask President Bush." In his delivery, he dropped the word "us." >>>

I think it is quite obvious that the "script" released by Kerry's aides was fabricated after the fact, but put that to one side. What the New York Times says Kerry said: "Do you know where you end up if you don't study, if you aren't smart, if you're intellectually lazy? You end up getting stuck in a war in Iraq. Just ask President Bush." is not what he said, as the millions of people who have seen Kerry on YouTube or read about his gaffe on countless sites like this one--and even most newspapers!--can attest.

Somewhere there might be a diehard liberal, dependent on the Times for his or her news, who was actually fooled by Zernike's misrepresentation. But there can't have been many such. To anyone who follows the news, the Times's account is an embarrassment which, no doubt, the paper will have to correct. But not until after the election.
