Suppliers of memory chips are hoping that sub-$1,000 PC buyers will quickly become frustrated with 16 Mbytes of memory and upgrade by adding expansion modules. Such a move might revive the sagging market for DRAM modules.

PC OEMs could shake up the DRAM market next year if they jump into home digital-video appliances. The memory needs of a low-priced home digital TV will be as high as those of today's high-end PCs. If OEMs hit a consumer purchasing wave for the new machines, DRAM demand could explode. That might quickly alter the supply-demand equation for DRAMs and threaten the present good deal for OEMs.
