Paul, there's a lot of meat in the stats in that article.

I have also been critical of Republican spending, especially the farm subsidy bill.

But I don't quite understand why President Bush and a Republican Congress spending 20.7% of GDP is a "spending bacchanal that shredded their moral authority and shocked Republican believers" and a "disaster", while President Reagan and a Democratic Congress spending 21.2% of GDP is hailed as such fiscal responsibility.

And while Reagan did beef up the military to fight the cold war, he did not face the kind of outlays that Iraq has demanded for the majority of Bush's term.
