Re: When is that coming out? Intel certainly has shot itself in the foot with exclusive FB-DIMM chipset (and with killing all alternative servers chipset providers). The FB-DIMM only policy has helped AMD and Opteron. Opteron would have lost more share if Intel provided registered DDR2 support for its server chips.

San Clemente is supposed to come out this year, isn't it...?

FB-DIMM has been helpful for Intel, since it has given them the ability to have 4 channels of memory for the design cost of 2 (in terms of routing, pin count, etc). This helps them to compete with AMD's integrated memory controller, and at least get on more of an equal footing when it comes to capacity and bandwidth . Unfortunately, it comes at the cost of higher power and longer latency (which in some cases means lower performance).

I would imagine that San Clemente is a dual channel DDR chipset, since the design and platform cost of 4 DDR channels coming from a single chip would presumably make it unappealing. Given this, it's going to be aimed at low cost and power sensitive markets.

Of course, contrary to the way this forum perceives things, not every market is power sensitive. Blackford today serves a large percentage of server requirements. But I would expect that large datacenters that are power limited are going to get more bang for the buck (or performance/watt) by going with San Clemente.
