Kurlack put out a report on semis today-bearish tone.

EXCERPT
"In Tuesday's bulletin, Kurlak wrote that an industrywide
inventory correction is still a factor in weakening order rates
and stock prices. Pricing has been decreasing more quickly
this year than in 1996, which has slowed the chip market,
and investors are still trying to adjust to the industry's rapid
slowdown, he wrote.

Not only will fourth-quarter earnings be weak, but the
industry's 1998 first quarter is still questionable given several
factors, including the retail move to low-priced PCs. Kurlak
believes the PC-driven semiconductor boom of the past five
years could be ending. For most consumers, he argues,
increased bandwidth for Internet access is becoming more
important than processing power. That would tip the scales
more in favor of low-end PCs, which already have powerful
enough microprocessors to run the typical range of Web and
desktop applications. The real concern is that growth in a
market driven by low-priced computers will not be enough
to offset falling prices for semiconductors overall."
