MILPITAS, Calif., July 23 /PRNewswire/ -- LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE: LSI) today announced that Pioneer Corporation (NYSE: PIO), a consumer-electronics leader and one of the core developers of the DVD-RW format, has chosen LSI Logic's DVxcel(TM) MPEG-2 CODEC as a key component for its DVR-7000 DVD recorder. The DVR-7000 is Pioneer's first DVD-R/RW recorder to be introduced worldwide. The DVR-7000 enables consumers to digitally record standard analog video into high-quality DVD format and playback commercial DVD movie titles. It also allows direct archiving of digital camcorder content via the i.LINK(R) interface onto DVD-R and DVD-RW discs.
LSI Logic's DVxcel, the industry's first MPEG-2 CODEC and the first CODEC to enable cost-effective consumer recordable products, came to LSI Logic as a part of the C-Cube acquisition, completed in June 2001.
"LSI Logic, through its acquisition of C-Cube Microsystems, is the recognized leader in MPEG-2 CODEC solutions and has a long history in the professional encoding markets," said Mr. Minoru Kosaka, general manager of Video Engineering Department, Pioneer Home Entertainment Company. "DVxcel not only supports MPEG-2 encoding but it also supports DV encoding, DV decoding, and DV-to-MPEG transcoding on a single-chip. This highly integrated architecture enables exceptional cost performance for consumer applications such as the DVR-7000."
The DV-enhanced DVxcel builds on the original DVxcel feature-set by adding integrated DV25 CODEC capabilities. This additional functionality enables DVxcel to encode and decode both MPEG-2 and DV25, as well as digitally transcode from DV25 to MPEG-2 -- all on a single chip. DV25-compatible products, including Digital 8(TM) and Mini DV camcorders, non-linear video editing decks, PCs and laptops, are growing in popularity because they allow consumers to capture, edit, store and share video in high-quality digital format. For the first time, DVxcel enables cost-effective sharing of video content between these DV devices and consumer DVD recorders.
"Pioneer is one of the worldwide leaders in the emerging DVD recorder market. We are delighted they have chosen LSI Logic's CODEC technology for their latest DVD-R/RW recorder product," said Timothy Vehling, director of consumer products marketing for LSI Logic's Broadband Entertainment Division. "Our DV-enhanced version of DVxcel offers an industry-leading integration level and feature set, and provides unsurpassed video quality for DVD recorders."
