hi lou,

sorry if it seems i was overstating the obvious about calling the isp tech. shrug.

regarding the infected .sctm file. here's what i suggest. using your file manager, search for that file. good chance 2 copies will pop up. with two different dates. the one with zero bytes is the infected one. delete it, if you have 2. that should satisfy the antivirus software. i've had to do exactly that same thing two times, and i was relieved to find the remedy was so painless.

regarding norton utilities, yes, i've had probs due to the software, but once i became aware of them (leaving norton running while installing a browser, for example) i had no further difficulties. utilities 3.0 is a favorite of mine.

one more thing, back to the dun prob of yours. recently here on this thread we discussed a bit about pc manufacturers being responsible for tech help with windows, if the os was factory installed. didn't you say you have a newer gateway? (sorry, too tired to search back.) have you considered calling them? dell has always been super about helping me out of jams.

good luck, and i'd be interested to know if that fixes the virus prob.

:)
