Your getting fusion, and fission-fusion, mixed up.

We can do the later now, not in 50 years. We can't get more energy out of the fusion reaction than what we put in, but we can use it as a source of energetic neutrons for a fast fission reactor. The technology already exists. Of course moving from laboratory level technology to a full scale power plant is far from trivial, but it isn't a 50 year thing either.
