03/13 Deutsche Telekom Drops Plan to Take Stake in AOL Bertelsmann

Hanover, Germany, March 13 (Bloomberg) -- Deutsche Telekom
AG said it will not take a stake in the joint venture between
America Online Inc. and Bertelsmann AG, though talks about
cooperation continue.

``Telekom is interested in cooperating with partners,'' said
Wolfgang Keuntje, the head of online services for Deutsche
Telekom. ``One potential partner is Bertelsmann.''

News that Deutsche Telekom had dropped plans to take a stake
came at a press conference with Microsoft Corp. in which they
gave details about their online alliance they announced Tuesday.

Herbert May, a member of Telekom's management board, said
the cooperation is part of Telekom's strategy to focus on
providing network technology and letting others provide content.

As part of the agreement, buyers of Microsoft's Windows 95
operating system in Germany will be able to sign on to Telekom's
T-Online service simply by clicking on an icon.

Users of T-Online will be able to choose between Netscape
Communications Corp.'s Internet browser or Microsoft Explorer.
Microsoft and Deutsche Telekom also will cooperate in developing
ways of making secure financial transactions over the Internet.
They will work together on providing so-called intranets,
internal networks for businesses.

As announced Tuesday, the pact will give customers of
Telekom's T-Online service access to the content of the Microsoft
Network.
