Here are the links to what appear to be the Intermec primary patents. On a first and very quick glance, they seem OK:

patft.uspto.gov

patft.uspto.gov

patft.uspto.gov

patft.uspto.gov

patft.uspto.gov

patft.uspto.gov

patft.uspto.gov

The closest-in-kind patent I was able to find held by Symbol are these:

patft.uspto.gov

patft.uspto.gov

patft.uspto.gov

Symbol's first true wireless patent was applied for in 2001 whereas Intermec's, which seems much more in tune with the RFID tag iteration, was applied for in 1997. Plus, Intermec's stuff is comprehensive.

I'm no patent lawyer, but an RFID tag and a bar scanner seem not to have a whole heck of a lot in common.

Take this with NaCL as the topic is undoubtedly much more complex than I presently see it.
