K.C. man busted for trying to sell stolen splicer on eBay

The Kansas City Star reports today prosecutors accused an 18-year-old Kansas City, Mo., man of trying to sell a stolen fiber-optics splicer worth $22,000 on the eBay Internet auction site. Andrew P. Cook was charged with receiving stolen property, a felony. He surrendered to police Tuesday and was released on a signature bond. Court records said the splicer Cook is accused of trying to sell was one of two stolen in June from two Southwestern Bell trailers.

The Star reports that in August, one of the splicers, a Fujikura Mass Fusion Splicer, was listed for sale on eBay. Bidding started at several hundred dollars, but quickly shot to more than $10,000. A prospective buyer became wary of the splicer's origin and asked for its serial number, which the seller provided and then tried to retract, saying he'd made a mistake.[LOL!] But by then it was too late, as the would-be buyer contacted Southwestern Bell, which, in turn, contacted local police. Spokesman Bob Chesnut told The Star eBay "has got to be the stupidest place where somebody could try to sell stolen property." Police reportedly recovered the other stolen splicer from a friend of the accused.
