AP March 19, 1998—A former Soviet intelligence officer asserted on the FOX News Channel’s
morning show that he is sure suitcase-sized nuclear weapons were built for the KGB in the
1970’s and 1980’s. Both Washington and Moscow have dismissed these claims. In a prepared
statement both governments said they had looked into the matter last year and found nothing.



AP June 5, 1998—It was reported today that in 1996 Chechen fighters gained access to a
suitcase-size nuclear weapon and had threatened to detonate the weapon in the heart of
Moscow. The Kremlin denounced the story stating categorically that all Russian nuclear
weapons are kept under tight control.
