Seems to me we have a difference of opinion here about which are the most meaningful 'social gains'. I see it as a wash, myself. Although when one considers the attitudes of most young people, we have certainly made gains in the area of gender and race. But if a young person can't find a decent job that leads to a career, they often seek solace in conspiracy theories and other forms of escapism. I am concerned many of our young, loaded down with college debt and lousy employment opportunities may throw some of those 'gains' out the window. Folks like Jesse Helms and Lee Atwater had huge victories exploiting this kind of resentment among middle-age voters. And the hard right continues to milk this vote cow as hard as they can.
