Familiarity may breed contempt, but for some PC users, familiarity breeds loyalty, according to a new study. Gateway 2000 and Apple Computer have the most loyal customers, according to a study conducted by International Data Corp. and A.C. Nielsen Corp. The report found that 51.1% of Gateway 2000 computer owners who plan to buy another computer would purchase it from the North Sioux City, S.D., computer maker again. Apple, in Cupertino, Calif., came in second in the survey, with 47.6% of owners saying they would purchase another Macintosh. The survey, called "The Homescan Tracker: 1997 PC Brand Loyalty and Purchase Intentions in U.S. Households," found that 11 million households will purchase home PCs this year and that 43% of those haven't decided which brand to buy. According to the study, the typical household planning to buy a PC is a married couple between the ages of 30 and 49 with a median income between $40,000 and $45,000.
