PairGain Launches Rate-Adaptive ADSL Products

Company's RADSL, HDSL and ADSL Solutions Now Allow Service Deployment From a
Single Platform

TUSTIN, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 2, 1997--PairGain Technologies Inc.
(NASDAQ:PAIR) Tuesday announced that it has launched its first in a series of
rate-adaptive ADSL (RADSL) products. With the addition of the RADSL products to
the successful Megabit Access product line, PairGain offers the widest range of
xDSL products available.

PairGain's RADSL products are the first of their kind and they operate from the
same platform as the company's other HDSL and ADSL products. As telephone
companies, PTTs and other service providers are discovering that there are
varying applications for high-speed access, providing service from a single
platform via PairGain's asymmetric and symmetric products saves in equipment
costs and allows service providers to literally mix-and-match service offerings
based on their customer's needs.

For example, one corporate customer might require a connection from a remote
office to corporate headquarters with video conferencing capabilities; in this
case, a symmetric HDSL product would offer the best solution, given that a large
amount of information is transmitted in both directions. Another residential
customer serviced out of the same central office might order service to enable
high-speed access to surf the Internet; in this case, an asymmetric product could
be deployed by the service provider since virtually all of the information would
be flowing in one direction, towards the customer.

PairGain's standard 220 shelf, a shelf deployed in most central offices in the
U.S., together with the company's other megabit access line cards, Access Hub and
Access Gate, provide for a practical high-speed xDSL remote access deployment
solution. PairGain's 220-based products allow for incremental deployment of xDSL
services on a customer-by-customer basis with low up front costs.

In addition, the network management function for the RADSL products can be
integrated with other xDSL products, consolidating network management functions
for all network elements into one system.

``PairGain has capitalized upon its HDSL heritage and clearly designed its new
RADSL products with telcos in mind. The Megabit Modem CRA and S1 NID ADSL
Splitter will remove customer premises deployment hurdles and help service
providers launch next-generation services,'' said Kieran Taylor, broadband
consultant at Telechoice Inc., a market research firm focused on local loop
technologies and services.

``Extended loop reach offered by PairGain RADSL products will expand serving
areas and help service providers maximize their investment in new equipment.''

PairGain's RADSL products offer two distinct advantages over similar ADSL
products. Rate adaptive technology automatically adjusts data transfer speeds to
the highest rate possible, depending on transmission distance and line quality.
PairGain's RADSL products also transmit data over greater distances -- in some
cases up to 25,000 ft. (7.6 km) -- than ADSL products, which typically have a
reach of 18,000 ft. (5.5 km). This allows telephone companies, PTTs and service
providers to reach a higher percentage of their customer base.

Megabit Modem CRA

The Megabit Modem CRA is a RADSL modem that installs at the customer site and
transfers data at rates up to 3.2 Mbps downstream (to the subscriber) and 1 Mbps
upstream (away from the subscriber) over a single copper telephone line. It is
capable of reaching distances as far as 25,000 ft. (7.6 km) and includes a
10BASE-T Ethernet port for connection to the customer PC or network, built-in
SNMP management, bridging and static IP routing for secure access. The Megabit
Modem CRA supports simultaneous voice and data over a single telephone line with
the addition of the S1 NID ADSL Splitter. The Megabit Modem CRA works in
conjunction with either the Megabit Modem CRA-C or the CRA-220S.

Megabit Modem CRA-C

The Megabit Modem CRA-C is a standalone RADSL modem that installs at the
telephone company, PTT or alternative carrier's central office or exchange, and
supports downstream data rates of up to 3.2 Mbps and upstream rates of up to 1
Mbps, connecting to a Megabit Modem CRA at the subscriber end. The Megabit Modem
CRA-C offices a cost-effective solution for a small Internet Service Provider or
operator of a small private network that has limited needs for ADSL deployment.
It includes a 10BASE-T port for connection to the provider network, static IP
routing, built-in SNMP network management and full startup, session startup and
fixed rate modes.

CRA-220S

The CRA-220S is a RADSL modem card which plugs into a 220-type chassis, a
standard shelf provided by PairGain used in telephone company central offices.
When used in conjunction with the Megabit Modem CRA, the CRA-220S supports
downstream rates of up to 3.2 Mbps and upstream rates of up to 1 Mbps. The
CRA-220S allows telephone companies, PTTs and service providers to intermix
PairGain RADSL products with its other xDSL products.

In addition, the CRA-220S includes a built-in POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service)
splitter to separate ADSL signals and POTS voiceband signals for simultaneous
data and voice support. The CRA-220S is also compatible with PairGain's AccessHub
and AccessGate, a combination DSLAM solution that enables telephone companies,
PTTs and service providers to establish an Ethernet hub capable of supporting
hundreds of subscribers.

S1 NID ADSL Splitter

The S1 NID ADSL Splitter divides the ADSL and POTS signals and works in
conjunction with the Megabit Modem CRA at the subscriber end. The splitter
installs on the outside of a home or building, and is enclosed in a weatherproof
and ruggedized wall mount enclosure. It features primary lighting and AC power
fault protection, and is a passive device, requiring no power or management from
the central office or subscriber. The NID can also work with more than one copper
line, so if an additional voice connection is added to the customer site, there
is no need for a second NID.

Applications

PairGain's RADSL product series offers high-speed solutions for the following
applications: (1) Consumer Internet Access: Telephone companies, PTTs, Internet
Service Providers (ISPs) and alternative carriers that market high speed services
to consumers can deploy the Megabit Modem CRA for applications such as high-speed
Web surfing, interactive online gaming, online research, and downloading large
files; (2) Internet Access for Business: The Megabit Modem CRA allows network
administrators to instantly establish Internet access at T1/E1 speeds from
multiple computers networked in a workgroup or across a LAN; (3) Transparent LAN
Access: PairGain's RADSL products are ideal for deployment in campus area
networks, as they enable LAN to LAN interconnections and fiber backbone
extensions for remote access; (4) Telecommuter/SOHO (Small Office/Home Office):
The RADSL products are also targeted towards telephone companies, PTTs and
alternative carriers that provide service for small business owners that work
from home, and to private network operators that manage telecommuting
applications.

Product Demonstrations

PairGain's RADSL, ADSL and HDSL products will be demonstrated at the Telecom
Interactive '97 show in Geneva, Sept. 8-14, in Booth No. 1431.

Availability

Megabit Modem CRA and CRA-C, CRA-220S and the S1 NID ADSL Splitter are available
